Launch of the Advanced Net Zero Innovation Centre (ANZIC)

The University of Strathclyde has launched the Advanced Net Zero Innovation Centre (ANZIC), a national facility driving the UK’s net-zero transition in energy, transport, and advanced manufacturing. ANZIC combines world-class research with industrial-scale testing, in partnership with the Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC) and the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS).

Located at the Rolls-Royce site in Inchinnan, Renfrewshire, ANZIC provides open-access, industrial-scale capabilities for research, testing, and development across clean energy, transport, and digital technologies.

EGSTON Technology at the Core of ANZIC’s Capabilities

A key enabler of ANZIC’s cutting-edge infrastructure is the deployment of EGSTON power and emulation systems, which underpin many of the Centre’s advanced testbeds. The EGSTON platforms deliver flexible AC/DC power supplies, regenerative three-phase AC emulation, and dynamic electric vehicle (EV) load emulation, allowing researchers and industry partners to create highly realistic electrical environments.

These systems are essential for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and real-time digital simulation (RTDS) applications, supporting validation of control, protection, and power conversion equipment under near-real operational conditions.

Flexible, Realistic Testing Across Multiple Energy Domains

The EGSTON-based setup enables ANZIC engineers to emulate complex AC and DC network topologies, simulate renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic arrays, and model transport-related DC grids for applications including buses, on-vehicle charging, and battery systems.

The platform’s flexibility allows seamless transition between AC and DC configurations, supporting a broad range of industrial and academic use cases.

First Industrial Applications: Voltempo HyperCharger Trials

One of the first industry users of this advanced environment was Voltempo, a Birmingham-based specialist in electric heavy goods vehicle (eHGV) charging systems. Using EGSTON power emulation, Voltempo successfully validated its HyperCharger technology, testing charger efficiency, thermal performance, and grid interaction in a controlled yet highly realistic setting.

Through its partnership with EGSTON, ANZIC demonstrates how state-of-the-art power emulation and network testing technologies can accelerate the safe, efficient, and scalable development of next-generation clean energy and transport solutions — a vital step towards achieving the UK’s net zero ambitions.
